England and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for the 2027 World Cup in Australia

Rugby World Cup 2027 draw ceremony
The pool stage draw was overseen by rugby legends such as former All Black Dan Carter.

The English side and Wales will face off in the same group for the 2027 RWC, promising a highly-anticipated early encounter in Australia. Completing the group in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This pairing recalls their famous clash in the pool stages of the 2015 World Cup, where a Welsh win at England's home ground contributed to the hosts' shock early exit.

Key Pool Pairings

The Irish alongside the Scots have likewise been drawn in a group together, just as the situation from the 2023 edition. On that occasion, they secured a convincing win, with their opponents unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, both made a strong impression as underdogs in the last World Cup, complete that Pool D.

Notably, the victors of these two groups cannot meet defending champions and top-ranked South Africa before the showpiece match, assuming the South Africans top their own group.

Knockout Implications

If the groups play out in line with the current global standings, further top favourites like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would also be kept apart from both England and the Irish until the final.

In that scenario, Los Pumas would be the other highly-seeded nation on that side of the elimination bracket as those northern hemisphere teams.

Hosts Draw Major Opener

Tournament hosts Australia find themselves together with their trans-Tasman rivals and triple champions New Zealand in Group A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in the city of Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee match designed to jump-start the competition.

In other groups, reigning champions South Africa have drawn the Azzurri, the Lelos and the Oaks. France are in a pool with Japan, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Expanded Format for 2027

Argentina will take on Fiji, Spain and Canada as the World Cup grows to 24 teams from the 20 who competed in 2023.

This edition will feature a round of 16 round for the first time in the competition's history.

Although the winner of Pool F may avoid some of the game's biggest beasts initially, they will meet the runner-up from Group B – probably Italy – in the first knockout round.

A total of four of the remaining six pool winners will play a third-placed side from the initial group phase.
