The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
