Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users buying such treatments need to be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight in about 18 months.
Comparing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually experience a slower weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
